Here’s a quick overview of the entire process.

Capture Your Signature

1. Supplies: Take a clean piece of bright white paper and a thick black marker like a Sharpie.
2. Write Large: Draw your signature big across the page. Bold strokes make extraction much cleaner digitally.
3. Photograph It: Capture a photo of your signature using your smartphone under bright, even light to avoid shadows or uneven exposure. Avoid portrait mode or filters that might distort your signature.
4. Transfer: Mac users can use Apple’s AirDrop to transfer the photo from their phone directly to their computer. Alternatively, you can email yourself a full-resolution copy or use Apple Photos or Google Photos. It makes no difference how you transfer the image, as long as you end up with a high-quality photograph in your computer’s Desktop or Downloads folder.

Quick Photoshop Extraction

You do not need advanced Adobe Photoshop skills to extract your signature. All you need to do is convert the photo of your paper into a transparent graphic file.

1. Canvas Setup: Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 900 pixels wide by 300 pixels tall at 300 ppi with a Transparent background.
2. Place Signature: Use File > Place Embedded to import the photo and scale it up to fill the frame.
3. Background Removal: Use the Remove Background AI button in the Contextual Task Bar to automatically strip away the white paper background.
4. Contrast Adjustment: Add a quick Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer to deepen the black ink.

4. Adjust Size, Anchor Point, Opacity, and Inset so the signature sits comfortably in your desired corner.
5. Click Save in the top-left corner and name your preset (e.g., Signature – Bottom Left).
6. Now, whenever you Export an image or group of images, simply select your signature preset to brand every photo automatically!

Pro Tip: Store your signature PNG and PSD files inside of a subfolder next to your Lightroom Catalog. By keeping these assets together, your watermarks will remain functional even if you move your Catalog to a different computer.
