One, Two, Or Three Subjects

Divider LineLet’s talk about the power of numbers in photography. To be clear, this lesson is not about the “rule of thirds.” The rule of thirds is a composition technique that I covered in the previous tutorial. In this tutorial, I focus on how the number of subjects that we choose to include in our images affects the mood of our photographs.

In a sense, this tutorial is all about the emotional connotations that our mind creates when we place just one subject in a piece of art. And after exploring “the power of one,” I talk about how the story that our image can tell will change when add a second, or a third subject, into our images.

This is not complicated stuff but the power of numbers, the way that including additional subjects will change an image, is something that I try to think about all of the time when I am out photographing. This is a lesson that I hope you will think about too the next time that you pick up your camera and head out into the field to shoot some photos.
